Beauty school should be a cut above

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Best beauty school

By Laurie Brown

Don’t let the name fool you.  Any beauty, cosmetology, or styling school can post sophisticated titles such as academy or institute on its front door, but only a top-rated school, with an earned reputation for guaranteed job placement will land you the job you deserve.

Look for a school that integrates the science of cutting, styling, coloring, skin care, and nail technology with the artistry of esthetics and make-up.  A successful cosmetology school will produce a portfolio of students who have landed great jobs in reputable salons, as well as visibly demonstrate a cutting-edge approach to today’s styling and cosmetology applications.

Most importantly, make a personal visit to every school on your list.  And let your intuition guide you.  How friendly is the staff?  Do the students look engaged and productive?  Are they working on mannequins or live models?  Is the environment professional, creative, upbeat, and especially clean?

Make time to sit down with an enrollment counselor with pertinent, well-thought out questions, such as:

  1. Where did last year’s students find jobs and in what professions?  Does your beauty school guarantee job placement, provide internships/apprenticeships, or both?
  2. What type of federally funded financial aid, grants, or loans does the school provide? (Be sure to understand the loan’s interest rates before signing on the bottom line.)
  3. Do you provide a broad curriculum that expands my opportunities for employment in a variety of fields?  What would my school day look like?
  4. What changes do you foresee coming in this field and how can I most prepare myself to embrace these changes?
  5. What types of continuing education will I need beyond this program and how can you help?
  6. Will you provide contact information for former students who can serve as a reference for the school?

In response, the enrollment counselor should demonstrate a unique interest in your creative abilities, helping to identify your particular talents and how the beauty school can best meet your needs.

Student stylists can’t go wrong with these beauty school curriculums

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Best beauty school

By Laurie McLachlan Brown

There is a lot to consider when choosing the best salon institute, beauty academy, or cosmetology school for your training.  First, choose only an accredited school, with an earned reputation for producing top-notch talent, one willing to share a portfolio of graduates who have landed great jobs in the beauty industry.  Second, choose a school that offers a curriculum best suited to your needs.  Doing so will significantly contribute to your success as a cosmetologist, esthetician, barber, or nail technician, as well as impress salons, day spas, resorts, hotels, and medical offices during a job interview.

?The Certified Learning in Cosmetology® curriculum, commonly known as CliC, is arguably the most popular teaching method in beauty colleges today.  The design program caters to haircutting, styling, coloring, and chemistry; as well as makeup, skin and nails.  Both students and teachers cite the fun and visually appealing textbooks, contemporary approaches to teaching, unique methods for nurturing creativity, and, in particular, the Salon Mentor training program, as examples of how their learning experience was enhanced using the CliC approach.

The Pivot Point curriculum will soon celebrate its fiftieth anniversary, which stands in tribute to the program’s sound commitment to staying ahead of the ever changing and competitive world of beauty education. Most recently the program launched “Designer’s Approach,” a revolutionary method that blends old school (i.e., lectures, texts and demonstrations) with new school techniques, such as a greater emphasis on visual artistry and design concepts.

Yet for more than 80 years, stands the internationally recognized Milady educational system.  Since the 1930s, more than ten million design professionals have earned their licenses using a Milady product.  In fact, Milady claims that more than 90 percent of all students currently enrolled in hair dressing or nail schools use its textbooks. Milady prides itself on its commitment to providing bi-lingual learning materials, in both English and Spanish, as well as its comprehensive toolbox of resources to help cosmetology teachers perform at their peak.

Smart stylists will ask each hairdressing academy under consideration what curriculum the school uses, why they have chosen that unique approach to education, and how it will benefit his/her career.

Do You Spell It Cosmotology Or Cosmetology?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Best beauty school

By Laurie McLachlan Brown

Whether you spell it, “cosmotology” or the proper, “cosmetology,” it’s important to know the ABC’s of your chosen field—be it a hair stylist, nail technician, esthetician, barber, or make-up artist.  Talent accounts for a lot while “in the chair” as many stylists say, but top beauty schools and hair dressing academies know there’s a business behind the scenes that requires just as much attention, and will build these concepts into their curriculums.

Staying organized can be a key factor in your success, according to Salon school instructors.  Hair stylists who show up on time, prepare his or her workspace, keep their workstations sanitized, and greet each client as if they are the most important person in the world, demonstrate a professional commitment to their vocation.

Good recordkeeping, as well, helps designers prepare for a client’s visit by reviewing services performed in the past, at what intervals, and any special notes about his/her situation.  A savvy stylist will make at least one or two personal notations on a client’s file so that he/she can use that to express interest in the client’s well being during the next appointment.

Cosmetology schools will also teach students to incorporate a smart sales approach into each client’s visit.  Promoting hair and skin products to clients demonstrates your cutting-edge approach and knowledge of the latest trends.  Doing so, also significantly increases your salary.

Keeping a keen eye on financial structures and goals could be your greatest contribution toward achieving success, according to instructors at some of the nation’s top-rated design colleges.  High-income earners set goals for themselves each month with regard to the number of clients, services provided, and products sold.  And then support that plan by staying organized, maintaining a great attitude, and always having a good appearance.
